What is Somatic Art Coaching?

As some of you may know, talk therapy, where we discuss traumatic events or explain a current stressful situation in detail, can be dissociating and can sometimes make you feel trapped in those emotions. Talk therapy can be really helpful for some of us, but too retraumatizing or triggering for others.

Somatic Coaching

Somatic Psychotherapy is a based in the scientific research that humans store memories and emotions on a cellular level, in the body. This means that the negative experiences or emotions we are having trouble moving through are deeply rooted on a subconscious level within the body, not accessible by cognitive approaches. Examples of Somatic Interventions we’ll use include:

  • Cultivating your own Somatic Awareness- learning how to identify and track areas of tension and constriction in your body that are related to said memory/emotion

  • Sequencing- learning how to safely watch body based tension move up or down and then lessen. This has a ripple effect allowing other areas in the body to follow.

  • Resourcing- discovering your unique thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that make you feel grounded/calm/safe and how to bring them into play.

Healing with Art

Art therapy is a healing technique rooted in a creative expression practice processing thoughts and feelings that would otherwise be painful, exhausting, or too triggering to tap into. Examples of Art Therapy Interventions we’ll use include:

  • Titration and Pendulation- learning how to allow small levels of the memory to come back through titration, while pendulating from that affliction to your safe space/resources

  • Descriptive Imagery- using colours, shapes and imagery to best describe how that emotion or memory feels in the body. Thich Nhat Hanh said, the more mindful awareness we give to an affliction, the sooner we will find relief

  • Act of Triumph- coined by Pierre Janet, an Act of Triumph is manipulating the memory into how you wish you could have acted. Reimagining the experience in a way so convincing that our nervous system adopts this new one to replace the old

Somatic Art Coaching

When we experience a traumatic or stressful event, the left side of the brain shuts down and the right side begins processing. If healing happens on the right side of the brain, it’s no wonder so many folks struggle with Talk Therapy. Both Somatic Psychotherapy and Art Therapy work on the right side of the brain. Robyn Jin has been studying Somatic Art Coaching after finding Somatic Psychotherapy too difficult at times, and needing to self-regulate in a safe space of art.

Somatic Art Therapy is helpful for those facing:

  • Anger

  • Addiction

  • Grief

  • Emptiness

  • Frustration

  • Inadequacy

  • Helplessness

  • Fear

  • Guilt

  • Loneliness

  • Depression

  • Overwhelm

  • Resentment

  • Failure

  • Sadness

  • Jealousy

Group Sessions

Humans with traumatic memories often tend to avoid or reduce healthy interactions with community connection. Our right side of the brain develops our relationships, and through art therapy group sessions we can titrate into safe connection and vulnerability. Benefits of group sessions include:

  • Witnessing shared, lived experience together

  • Developing your own re-parenting language through applying how you would support others to your own wounds

  • Growing inspiration through others strengths

  • Co-regulation through the support and understanding of others

  • A grand release

  • Connection back into society
